I rode from Santa Monica.. to Santa Barbara... and back this past weekend...the 13th ANNUAL SANTA BARBARA DOUBLE CENTURY ...a 200-mile, 2-Day ride. The ride is done annually by Shifting Gears, one of the local bicycling clubs in Los Angeles. Each year for the past few years it was dedicated to the memory of Drew Franklin, a former cyclist who passed away from AIDS. I know I would have liked Drew! When I got back home, words from one of the TRL's were still in the front of my brain. He called me a hero. ...one of the heroes on this ride... This morning, I picked up my red bandanna I got on World AIDS Day - L. A. and read the words again. They held more meaning now... and....
The H.E.R.O. Creed
I have risen before dawn in this fight against AIDS • I've rallied family, friends and strangers to support me in this fight • I've spent mornings, afternoons and weekends training for those who can't • I have spent hundreds of dollars on equipment, clothing and energy bars • I have learned hand signals, how to clip in, and the importance of stopping at every stop sign • I have yelled "Car Up!," "Car Back!," and "On Your Left" approximately one million times • I've raised thousands of dollars to support the well being of someone else's life • I have learned that if I don't talk about HIV, to prevent it from spreading, who will? • I will stand in line with my closest friends for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and to use the bathroom • I will ride side by side with them for the same cause • I will spend a week sleeping in a tent, eating in a tent, and showering in a truck • I will make over two thousand new and interesting friends while raising public awareness of HIV/AIDS • I will laugh out loud and cry with them • I will dedicate a week of my life to improve someone else's • I will do things with my body I did not think I could do • I will boldly show the world how strongly I believe in this cause • I will ride my bicycle from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise awareness and money in the fight against HIV / AIDS • I am a California AIDS/LifeCyclist • I am a HERO
... they are going to hold even more meaning during and especially after the first week in June.

The AIDS/LifeCycle Day on the Ride... a "sample" of what an actual day in June will be... was held on Saturday.
I did TRL so other TRL's who have done TRL all year could ride. .. (TRL's do not often get to just RIDE a training ride .. just for the sake of riding.) Others did Roadie work so others could ride. Everyone helping each other reach their goal. That's what ALC is ... .. that's the real spirit of ALC.
I can't wait until June!!!

Okay... this time, my training took almost NO resemblance to what I had planned for it to be. My thoughts in November 2007 of what would VAGUELy happen in the course of my training took a Twilight Zone CreepShow Tales from the Crypt detour. And my brain, along the way, .... what brain??? Let's see... Since November I have come close to living on the streets (again), losing people who care about me & who I care about, lost two jobs, gotten accused of a very dastardly behaviour (chickenhawk) & ostracized for it, become soooo paranoid about my living situation, had illusions of .... family .... shattered & layed at my feet, and just about given up on it all. Lucikly, there were a few things to prevent that..... hanging on at fingertips to a new family of my choosing, putting myself in the hands of my doctors for some much needed repair work, keeping in contact with a few friends, meeting & making new friends (not many.. gotta work on that one), and the faith of a special friend. I'll leave that one at that.
Another thing helped & is helping too. I like to write (yea, Eric, WE KNOW!!!)... and sometimes what I want to say comes out completely different. Fortunately for me, there are others out there with a better grasp of the English language & who have better clarity. Some of them I find in fellow ALC Blogs / Homepages. And, each time I run across one, it rejuvenates me & I get a renewed expectation of what to life has to offer. When I run across one of these gems, an oasis of courage in a tumultuous world, I'm going to link to them in my Links List so others can share & reap the benefits of their words / emotions / thoughts... COURAGE!!

I have about one & 1/2 month to do the impossible.... Complete a planned six-months of training... safely.... Raise another almost $2500.oo..... Make a lot of new & old friends... Help a LOT of people. I hope to do the fourth goal, just by riding in June..... & raising more funds..... I'm hoping goal #3 will happen in the natural course of life.... As for the first two goals.... Help me reach BOTH goals!!! thanks... |
As for me... hmmm.... It's going to be an interesting month and 1/2, nervous yet wonderful 1st week of June, fantastic & rewarding post-ride & new training season next year... and I cannot wait to see what else the rest of my life has to offer. Sometimes (most times) it is good, fun, rewarding & enlightening to actually pick that fruit instead of just admiring it hanging there on that tree / vine.

OK... my total mileage for February: Goose-Egg!! But that high maintenance I talked about before... well... got a lot of that taken care of last month. Even got Trevor in for a tune-up. Took him out for much needed exercise the beginning of the month with a couple of friends (a MUCH OUT OF SHAPE ride on my part, btw!!). & a short ride to the beach breakwall just past the bridge at the end of Ballona Creek bike path. I wanted to go further, but... well... . Rode around for 30 miles Friday, just to get out of the house &, of course ,get back on that road to being in shape!! Went up to Malaga Cove in Palos Verdes with the Pos Peds last Saturday & the past Saturday with the Culver City group. Good training!! How do you ride in 30-mile per hour wind??? Very alertly & carefully!! And then you get home & put some eyedrops in the eyes to wash out any sand... and three days later, you still can smell the surf!! Probably for a week or so ;=)
So far this month.. only about 260 miles. If it weren't for the short rides earlier, and the threadmill & the walk-arounds I usually do, I would not have even made it up to the Cove... albeit.. very VERY slowly now!! I have GOT to hit those hills more!! That's the primary goal for a while!! And... getting into a yoga class somewhere.

Well... I can now say, YES!! I HAVE BONKED!! Stupid me!! The signs were there, I just didn't listen. A trip to the ER revealed a broken Ulna, not displaced, but broken nonetheless. So, after four weeks in a cast, and two weeks in a removable splint, I head back to the doctor on Monday to HOPEFULLY get the okay to remove the splint.. and... to be VERY VERY CAREFUL when I ride from now on.
